Witty portraits of the English, by a popular woodcut illustrator for the Illustrated London News. Wm. Thackeray is the author for the sketch, The Fashionable Authoress, and another Captain Rood and Mr. Pigeon. Douglass Jerrold authors five, including The Cockney, Debtor and creditor, and The Printer's Devil. Nimrod does two, Henry Brownning authors three, and Wm. Howitt contributes The Young Squire. The humorous was a new direction for popular, inexpensive illustrations. This copy is in the original green , blindstamped cloth, with a new cloth spine and the old backstrip laid down. Frontispiece, an extra title illustrated with The Creditor, and 30 other full page woodcut sketches. Pages 370 plus 2 pages publisher ads. Inside, very clean and tight with new endpapers. The plates came from a different paper stock and are some browned, whereas the text block is not. Protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket.
